bangkokairuniRecently, Bangkok Airways’ new cabin attendant uniform was acclaimed as 1 of 7 most outstanding airline uniforms of the world by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine in the article - “7 Flight Attendant Uniforms That Make Fashion Statements”.

Mr. Cliff Muskiet, a well-known critic and blogger who runs Uniform Freak Blog, which collects flight attendant uniforms of more than 440 airlines throughout the world said in Condé Nast Traveler Magazine’s website “I like the different colors of blue they have used, and I like the variety. southwalesfiremenGreg Mullins, the Commissioner of Fire and Rescue NSW, well remembers the first uniform he was issued with when he signed up as a professional firefighter 34 years ago.

''We called it the lion tamer's suit,'' he told The Sun-Herald.

''It was made out of wool. It had lovely shiny brass buttons down the front. You looked like a Grenadier Guard. It was totally impractical. You had handmade boots from the boot workshop and they used to fill up with water because they went on the outside [of the uniform]. Your coat - if you got soaked with water, as you did at every fire - they were like blotting paper. They held four times their own weight in water. They were just shocking, but they looked great when you shined the buttons.''

Now Mr Mullins is rolling out new uniforms made of space-age materials that boast microchips to warn when they need washing and replacing.

New Design for Spokane Police Uniforms Debuted Over Weekend Print E-mail

spokanepoliceUniforms with a new look, durability and utility are on the way for Spokane Police patrol officers. An officer in a trial design patrolled the streets over the weekend and helped command staff get an idea of how the look will fare during police conduct. The style is expected to be phased in over the next two years.

Spokane City Council approved the $38,452.63 contract with Blumenthal Uniforms in June to create 70 new outfits for officers. The department saved money on the contract by reducing the amount of uniforms by half. Instead of four uniforms, each officer will have two medium weight outfits to cope with both the winter and summer seasons.

Officer Susan Mann has been wrangling the custom design for the past few months trying to reduce their costs. She calls the look a compromise between the need for professionalism and utility found in the jumpsuits. The last time they switched uniforms, it was in 2007 with the addition of jumpsuits costing the department about $185,000.

tampakhakiuniTampa officials preparing to host next week's Republican National Convention say they've figured out how to make the massive police presence that will be on hand seem a little less intimidating: khaki uniforms.

The Tampa Police Department spent more than $500,000 to outfit the roughly 1,000 officers from Tampa, and up to 3,000 additional police coming to help from other parts of the state, in identical khaki uniforms that will prominently display their names and agencies.

"It's obviously cooler for the officers, and it has a more approachable look to it," Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said.

The uniforms are only a cosmetic change, but they represent a broader effort by officials in Tampa and Charlotte, which will host the following week's Democratic National Convention, to calm nerves during what is often a chaotic event.

vancouverwomenpoliceIf everything goes to plan, Savanna Smith will soon join the ranks of the Vancouver police department.

The lanky 21-year-old’s pending recruitment to the police force will mark the fulfilment of a personal goal, and provide validation that her years of academic and physical effort (she’s a formidable lacrosse player on full sports scholarship to Philadelphia’s La Salle University) have paid off in the form of a dream career.

Yet her accomplishment will likely go unnoticed outside of her family, friends and the walls of the VPD’s Cambie Street headquarters.

She’ll become just another woman in uniform — one of more than 340 female officers serving with the department, a number that represents about 24 per cent of the VPD’s overall contingent and expected to keep growing.

fashionolympicsWho said sportswear can't be chic?

The athletes' parade during Friday's opening ceremony might as well have been a catwalk show, with some of fashion's biggest names — Armani, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney — designing the team uniforms.

Many in the fashion industry are already calling this the most stylish Olympics ever.

"For any designer, this is the biggest audience you can possibly have for your designs and arguably the most critical," said Avril Graham, Harper's Bazaar executive fashion and beauty editor. "These outfits have to fly the flag and represent their nation in the eyes of the rest of the world."

The Italians must be some of the best-dressed athletes, scoring points with an understated monochrome kit in navy and white by Giorgio Armani, as well as waterproof blue designs for their sailing team by Prada.

recycledunisDue to coming into constant contact with materials like ink, dust and cement, the uniforms of those working at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, Bahia, only last around two months on average. Yet far from being thrown away, their usable life is only just beginning.

With the issue of sustainability in mind, authorities at the Arena found an ideal destination for all these used pieces of clothing: since last year, 1,800 items were cleaned and donated to the Projeto Axé Design, which turns them into products such as bags, placemats, toiletry bags, mobile-phone holders, purses and aprons.

And while this project does not come under the direct auspices of FIFA or the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ Organising Committee (LOC), it remains perfectly in line with the issue of waste and recycling, a crucial part of the overall strategy for Brazil 2014.

“We’re giving these materials a new lease of life, by adding such things as patterns, accessories and linings,” explained Luciano Galeao, who is the stylist behind the design of the recycled items.

phoenixpoliceA big change is coming to the Phoenix Police Department. The new chief is changing the uniforms.

Officers can wear the more formal blue uniform, or they can wear a more casual uniform of a black polo and cargo pants.

Starting October 1, all officers will be required to wear the blue uniform, complete with metal badge and name tag.

The chief says he wants to make Phoenix Police officers instantly recognizable in the community.

"When you see our officers in public and you see our officers serving search warrants at your home and doing investigations this is what you're going to see us in," says Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.
